The Chapter 2: Summer Cousins
“Summer Cousins” is a reflection of the challenges that emerge in balancing the realms of “limitless” and the “real.” During development, we examined each garment individually, aiming to redefine the boundary between character and fashion design, all while factoring in the demands of hotter weather.
Much of this journey involved revisiting earlier creative developments, identifying the instances where the fantastical to real-world translation had succeeded, and amplifying the elements that facilitated it. Rather than seeking external references, we turned to our own collection of developmental tests and visuals as source material, using them as a foundation for abstraction and reinterpretation. Our biggest technical enhancement was in refining our colouring techniques, with a focus on minimising the number of dye sessions needed to create the pieces. This involved experimenting with prolonged dye exposure times while reducing the dye quantity used in each bath. For our sublimated pieces, we adopted digital methods for crafting pieces and patterns, as well as directly printing our pattern pieces onto fabric, thus sidestepping unnecessary waste generation. Finally, we sought to repurpose the scrap sublimation paper material to embellish our brand labels with secondary prints and future creative endeavours.
As a result, our SS24 is a vibrant and functional extension of our previous work, tailored to hotter weather. As always, it was made especially for those that appreciate clothes that tell a story, aiming to expand the range of personas one could be and offering a blend of cosplay and nostalgia.
