Our eighth chapter of The Possible Family Reunion in RPG Space is an ode to storytelling in its most literal sense, and to the fantasy found within the everyday recollection of memories. The setting is a very normal barbecue — or rather, a multitude of barbecues all blended into one. Grandad — our recurring character — and his two grandchildren remember shared moments from the earlier years of their lives: a warped recollection of meals, conversations and games, collapsed through the passage of time. It is through the retelling of these histories that fantasy begins to emerge, and guides this collection.

The starting point was a desire to look within our own living libraries: our parents and grandparents, and to learn more about them before us. The further back we reached, the stranger these histories became, our grandparents’ stories seeming so far removed that they began to feel folkloric. Details shift between memory, embellishment and invention, yet through their retelling they get tangible and vivid. And turning to our own memories felt mythic too, with childhood memories feeling real, no matter how fantastic. The limitlessness of playing with a ball outside, endless games of make-believe that shaped entire universes. Digital worlds held that same depth, with a handful of pixels enough to pull you in completely.

In taking time to share our memories of barbecues and family gatherings between ourselves, we realised how many moments that felt personal were quite ironically completely universal. An uncle teaching you self-defence. An impossibly cool older sibling that was a regular awkward teenager in retrospect. Catching your mum with a cigarette for the first time and feeling like your understanding of her has collapsed - does she want to die? In developing the collection, we wanted to treat these seemingly insignificant familial histories with the same curiosity we’ve previously given to ancient or prehistoric ones.

Perhaps our desire to explore the recent past comes from us reaching the age our parents were when they had us, realising how young they must have felt; and trying to understand the visual void of their lives before our own. Or maybe it comes from losing grandparents and yearning for the histories that disappear with them, or from the growing awareness that one day they might. Or maybe it’s our own memories, distorting and warping over time until the face of an old family friend becomes a void in the family narrative, impossible to place. A family home has long since been hosting barbecues that weren’t ours.

There was something really precious in exploring these hidden histories and allowing ordinary memories to become mythologies of their own. And it’s in their telling and retelling that we find joy here today.

With love,
Yaku and Nas
